Gateway to China · A Journey of Discovery— Overseas Chinese College International Freshmen“Cultural Immersion Program”Session 3:“Shared Moon, United Hearts”Successfully Held
On the afternoon of September 28, the third session of the“Gateway to China · A Journey of Discovery” Cultural Immersion Program — “Shared Moon,United Hearts” Mid-Autumn Cultural Experience — was successfully held. International students and Chinese students partnered together to immerse themselves in the charm of traditional Chinese festivals through cultural introduction, snow skin mooncake DIY, Jade Rabbit lantern making, lantern riddle guessing, and handwritten cards and video letters home. As a school-based practice echoing the“Study in Beijing”brand orientation, this event used the Mid-Autumn Festival as a bridge to help international students experience and integrate into Beijing through hands-on practice.

Cultural Introduction
The event began with an introduction to the origins and customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival. From the legend of“Chang’e Flying to the Moon” to traditions such as moon gazing, eating mooncakes, lighting lanterns, and guessing riddles, students learned that the heart of the festival lies in“reunion.”The mentor also highlighted that Beijing, as an ancient capital, has its own unique Mid-Autumn customs — enjoying osmanthus blossoms and tasting Beijing-style mooncakes — giving students a more vivid and intimate sense of what it means to celebrate the festival in Beijing.

Snow Skin Mooncake DIY
Students then made snow skin mooncakes together. From kneading the dough, dividing it into portions, wrapping the filling, to pressing the mold, every step was full of fun. They learned to push the dough forward with the palm and fold it back, repeating until smooth; to cup their hands and slowly push the dough up around the filling; and to press, invert, and release the mold to reveal beautifully patterned mooncakes. They showed their creations to each other, and even packed some to share with friends. This session not only gave international students a hands-on experience of the Mid-Autumn ritual of“making reunion,”but also echoed the“life integration”advocated by“Study in Beijing” — feeling the warmth of Beijing life from the tip of the tongue to the tips of the fingers.

Jade Rabbit Lantern DIY
In the lantern-making session, students crafted Jade Rabbit lanterns. The Jade Rabbit, the little rabbit on the moon who pounds medicine, symbolizes purity and kindness. Students built the frame with bamboo sticks, pasted colored paper, and attached LED lights and tassels, bringing adorable rabbit lanterns to life. Lanterns symbolize light and hope, carrying blessings for family far away.

Lantern Riddle Guessing
The lantern riddle guessing brought the event to a climax. With three difficulty levels, students competed with each other — some thinking silently, others discussing enthusiastically. A riddle like“Sometimes in the sky, sometimes on a tree, sometimes like a plate, sometimes like a sickle”was quickly answered:“The Moon.” Winning students received bookmarks and stationery, filling the room with laughter and warmth.

Handwritten Cards & Video Letters
The warmest moment was“Handwritten Cards & Video Letters.”Students wrote messages to their families in their native languages or in Chinese, then looked into the camera and read them aloud, recording a video letter home. The heartfelt words moved everyone present. This session not only expressed longing for family but also echoed the Mid-Autumn cultural meaning of“sharing this moment across the world.”

Shared Insights
Throughout the event, Chinese and international students partnered together — kneading dough, wrapping fillings, guessing riddles, and writing cards —building connections through interaction. International students said this was their first Mid-Autumn Festival in China; making mooncakes, crafting lanterns, and guessing riddles gave them a sense of the warmth of“reunion”and deepened their appreciation of Chinese culture. Chinese students reflected that in accompanying and sharing, they not only deepened their own understanding of Mid-Autumn culture but also honed their cross-cultural communication skills, gaining a deeper appreciation of what it means to“tell China’s story well and tell Beijing’s story well.”

This Mid-Autumn cultural experience is a school-based practice of the Overseas Chinese College in echoing the“Study in Beijing”brand orientation and promoting“understanding Beijing and integrating into Beijing.”It is also a meaningful exploration of the Institute for Overseas Chinese Studies in using traditional festivals as a bridge to promote exchange between Chinese and international youth. Using the Mid-Autumn Festival as a medium, the event brought international students from the classroom to life, from campus to the city; building bridges through the spirit of“overseas Chinese,”it helped Chinese and international students understand through cooperation and identify through experience. When the bright moon rises, Beijing is no longer just a point on the map — it is a place where young people live, experience, and narrate together.
