On the afternoon of September 16, the second session of the “Gateway to China · A Journey of Discovery” Cultural Immersion Program —“Herbal Encounter·A Mind-Body Experience”— was successfully held. International students, accompanied by cultural mentors and Youth Ambassadors for Global Communication, visited the Fengtai Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Through guided tours, interactive experiences, and hands-on crafts, they explored the unique charm of TCM culture.

TCM Orientation

In the afternoon, students gathered at the Overseas Chinese College for a light-hearted TCM orientation. The cultural mentor introduced core concepts such as “balance,” “Qi,” and “meridians” in simple English, and led a moxa hammer experience. Students tried to gently tap their shoulders and necks with moxa hammers, enjoying the relaxing herbal aroma. They then watched an English short film about TCM, building anticipation for the museum visit.

Five Senses Experience

Students then arrived at the Fengtai Museum of TCM. On the sixth floor, they toured the Residential Health Living Hall, including the dining room, living room, study, and bedroom. In the study, they experienced the “Five-Tone Music Therapy” interactive module. The five notes — Gong, Shang, Jue, Zhi, and Yu — correspond to the five organs. Students closed their eyes and listened, feeling the resonance between music and body-mind.

They then visited the main exhibition area on the fifth floor, touring seven halls in chronological order: Pre-Qin and Han, Jin and Sui, Tang, Song-Jin-Yuan, Ming, Qing, and Modern. Lin Chen, the director of Pu Huang Yu Community Health Service Center, gave an introduction in Chinese, while the Youth Ambassadors for Global Communication provided simultaneous English introduction, bringing to life stories of “medicine and food sharing the same origin,” “the four diagnostic methods,” “artemisinin,” and the “acupuncture bronze figure.” Students also tasted cold-prevention herbal tea and experienced meridian testing, receiving personal body constitution reports.

Herbal Craft

Finally, students went to the fourth-floor practice hall to make herbal shell rattles. Under the teacher’s guidance, they threaded the shell, tied knots, attached ribbons, and painted the shell. Inside the rattle were two herbs: cinnamon bark (warm and pungent, to warm the body and relieve pain) and millettia vine (to invigorate blood and relax muscles). Shaking the shell produced a gentle, woody sound, accompanied by a subtle herbal fragrance. Through hands-on practice, students experienced the TCM wisdom of “music and medicine sharing the same origin.”

Shared Insights

During the event, the Youth Ambassadors for Global Communication accompanied the international students throughout, facilitating cross-cultural communication and acting as a bridge between Chinese and international students. The international students remarked that the activity offered them a more tangible understanding of traditional Chinese medicine and sparked a strong interest in Chinese health concepts and lifestyle. The Chinese students, meanwhile, reflected that in presenting Chinese TCM culture, they not only deepened their own understanding of Chinese culture but also refined their international communication skills, coming to better appreciate the significance of “telling China‘s story well.”

This “Herbal Encounter · A Mind-Body Experience” used TCM as a medium, allowing international students to feel the warmth of Chinese culture through immersive experiences, while Chinese students grew through international communication practice. As a vivid practice of the Institute for Overseas Chinese Studies in promoting cross-cultural exchange, the event built bridges and planted seeds of friendship and mutual learning in young hearts. A wisp of herbal fragrance, a shell rattle, a moment of translation — what connects is not just two languages, but understanding and respect between diverse cultures.
